Our Commitment to Nature, Biodiversity, and Community

At SMT Works and Services Co. Limited, we recognize that our work – from power poles to road construction – has a direct impact on nature and the communities we serve. Every electrical pole represents rock extracted somewhere in Uganda; every wooden pole represents a tree that was cut. Power lines require corridors kept clear of vegetation. Civil works reshape the land. We take this impact seriously, and we have built it into how we plan, price, and deliver every project.

Our Commitment to Nature and Biodiversity

Like every other aspect of human life, SMT Works and Services Co. Limited’s activities are in constant interaction with biodiversity. Protecting biodiversity is a priority for our business and our projects, and it is a component of how we manage risk, regulation, and reputation.

To meet this commitment, SMT:

1. Complies with all environmental and social laws and regulations applicable to our activities in the countries where we operate. 2. Formulates long-term, enduring partnerships with private sector and conservation organizations that conserve the environment and promote biodiversity. 3. Supports social enterprises engaged in the green circular economy and environmental conservation. 4. Aligns our biodiversity strategy with the global objectives of the Kunming-Montreal 5. Global Biodiversity Framework, as part of building a responsible corporate presence in Uganda and Africa. 6. Implements ecological site management wherever possible - including banning chemical plant protection products and promoting green space management that respects natural cycles and local biodiversity. 7. Applies the "avoid, reduce, compensate" sequence to project development across all our sites. 8. Embeds Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into every action and decision. 9. Develops eco-friendly and sustainable energy solutions.

Our Community Commitment

As part of our public and social responsibility, SMT commits to achieving a net gain in biodiversity through deliberate action and strategic investment in the communities and environments where we work. Specifically, we commit to:

  • Mitigating the impact of our activities on people and nature.
  • Altering site routes and locations to bypass valuable habitats and vegetation wherever possible.
  • Investing at least 35% of profits into communities, with a focus on environmental conservation.
  • Planning shutdowns to reduce their duration and intensity, and minimizing avoidable impact.
  • Inducting all staff and teams to respect the human rights of the communities where we work.
  • Securing wayleaves and fairly compensating affected landowners for rights of way.
